TP-Link TL-SG108E vs Netgear GS308E: Which Budget VLAN Switch Should You Buy?

If you’ve read the homelab VLAN setup guide, you already know the TP-Link TL-SG108E is the switch most homelab guides point to. It’s not the only 8-port managed switch in that price range, though, and Netgear’s GS308E gets recommended just as often in the same forum threads. Both do 802.1Q VLAN tagging. Both cost about the price of a nice lunch. So which one actually belongs on your network?

I’ll go category by category. The honest answer: these two are closer than most comparisons make them sound, and the real decision comes down to two things, not five.


The two switches

On paper these are closer than most comparisons make them sound. Both support LAG and port mirroring, both use a local web UI, and both are covered by a limited lifetime hardware warranty. The differences that remain are real but narrower than the spec sheets suggest.


VLAN capacity

The TL-SG108E supports up to 32 VLANs. The GS308E supports up to 64.

For a typical homelab setup (Trusted, Homelab, IoT, Guest, maybe a fifth for a lab/test network) neither number matters. You’d need to be running a genuinely unusual segmentation scheme to hit 32, let alone 64. This spec shows up in every comparison because it’s an easy number to put in a table, not because it changes a real buying decision for most people.

Winner: GS308E on paper. Doesn’t matter in practice for the vast majority of homelabs.


Price

The GS308E is usually the cheaper of the two, though the gap is smaller than it used to be: current Amazon pricing has the SG108E around $25 and the GS308E around $24, roughly a dollar apart. Prices move with sales cycles on both sides, so check current pricing before you buy, but don’t expect a dramatic gap either way.

Winner: GS308E, narrowly. Not a decision-driver on its own at this price point.


This is the category most comparisons get wrong, and it’s easy to see why: the spec sheets look different if you’re skimming them, but line them up side by side and they land in the same place. Both switches support static Link Aggregation (2 groups of up to 4 ports each on the SG108E; 2 LAGs of up to 4 members each on the GS308E, functionally the same) and both support many-to-one port mirroring for troubleshooting or running an IDS/packet capture. Neither switch supports LACP (dynamic LAG); both are static-only.

If you were expecting the SG108E to be the only one of the two with these features, it isn’t. This category is a tie.

Winner: Tie. Both switches cover LAG and port mirroring for typical homelab use.


Warranty and support

Both switches carry a limited lifetime hardware warranty on their current SKUs: TP-Link extends limited lifetime coverage to its business-class switch line (which the SG108E is part of), and Netgear backs the GS308E the same way. Neither switch has a meaningfully shorter warranty than the other on paper.

Winner: Tie. Both are covered the same way; warranty length isn’t the differentiator some comparisons make it out to be.


Firmware and web UI

Both switches use a browser-based local web UI, no cloud account or app required for basic VLAN configuration. That matters if you’d rather not create yet another vendor account to manage a switch that never leaves your closet.

The SG108E’s interface is the one most homelab guides screenshot (including ours), so there’s more community documentation, more forum troubleshooting threads, and more “here’s exactly what to click” walkthroughs if you get stuck. The GS308E’s local UI does the same job with less homelab-specific documentation to lean on if something doesn’t behave the way you expect.

Winner: SG108E, for documentation depth. This is the real differentiator between the two switches, more than any single spec.

For most people setting up their first VLAN-segmented homelab network: the SG108E’s documentation depth makes it the easier first switch, since you’ll be following a guide (ours or someone else’s) that was written against its exact web UI. Once you’ve done this once and know exactly what you’re doing, the GS308E is a perfectly capable repeat-buy for a second network closet, at a price that’s essentially a wash.
